Ten years ago, the European Union committed itself "to make a decisive impact on the eradication of poverty by 2010". Recent figures refer to 84 million people or 17% of the EU population who are at risk of living in poverty today. The political declaration of intent in 2000 was not sufficient to reduce poverty and exclusion. The European Council agreed in June 2010 on a poverty and social exclusion target of lifting at least 20 million people out of poverty by 2020. How can we work together for this new commitment to bring a real change?

In this context, we would like to invite you to attend our ecumenical conference which will bring together Members of the European Parliament, representatives of the European Commission and of the Belgian Presidency, as well as representatives of the different churches, Caritas and Diaconia.

The conference will provide a unique opportunity to exchange experiences in the fight against poverty and social exclusion, and to foster cooperation between actors who are active in this area. On this occasion, our four organisations will launch their common recommendations on poverty and social exclusion to the European Union and its Member States.

The conference will be followed by an exhibition on the work of Christian actors across Europe tackling poverty and social exclusion and will be accompanied by a reception. The exhibition, including contributions of our members, will be open from the 28th of September - 1st of October in the European Parliament.
