Intercultural / Interreligious Dialogue

The COMECE secretariat supports an ambitious intercultural policy within its dialogue with the EU institutions through publications and seminars and by participating in public hearings. It supports the view that European decision-makers should pay particular attention to the Interreligious dimension of intercultural dialogue in order to make a contribution to a European construction for civil and international peace:

- at the internal level of the EU: Intercultural / Interreligious dialogue as a means of fostering social cohesion and civil peace within the pluralistic societies of the EU member states;

- at the external level of the EU: intercultural / interreligious dialogue as a means of fostering peace and reconciliation in the world, in particular between the EU and its neighbourhood.

The competencies of the EU in the intercultural field are based on article 167 of the consolidated version of the Lisbon Treaty:

 

-at the internal level of the EU: “The Union shall contribute to the flowering of the cultures of the Member States, while respecting their national and regional diversity and at the same time bringing the common cultural heritage to the fore. To this aim, “(a)ction by the Union shall be aimed at encouraging cooperation between Member States”.

It is a sign of hope in the fact that religions and cultures today show openness to dialogue and sense the urgent need to join forces in promoting justice, fraternity, peace and the growth of the human person.
