A Reflection on the EU Roma Framework

 

On 24 October 2011, COMECE in cooperation with CCEE (Council of European Bishops’ Conferences) presented its current reflections and proposals to the European Commission in order to improve the living conditions of Roma people in the context of the common good.

COMECE Present 12 guidelines:

  1. To promote the logic of solidarity
  2. Respect for Roma identity
  3. Family mainstreaming
  4. Acting with and for them
  5. Accompanying and support
  6. Promoting the social and economic autonomy of Roma families
  7. Development of Roma leadership
  8. Defining priorities
  9. Linking education and employment
  10. Micro-projects
  11. Access to the health care system
  12. The Catholic Church, a reliable partner

 

The improvement of the Roma’s living conditions and their inclusion in society require the implementation of diverse political actions. The following proposals are concrete initiatives implementing the general criteria stated above, that can help in the inclusion of a large part of Roma into social life. The proposals concern the following areas:

 

  1. Social and economic improvement
  2. Education and professional training
  3. Health
  4. Housing
  5. Citizenship and the fight against discrimination
