The annual meetings with religious leaders were launched by President Barroso in 2005. At the first meeting of this type, the religious leaders only met with the President of the European Commission. In 2006, the then President of the Council, the Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel, also attended the meeting. Since 2007, the representatives of the churches and faith communities are received by the three presidents of the European institutions.
